EMPLOYMENT AND IMMIGRATION CANADA TO INSTALL
UP TO 800 COPIES OF BANYAN VINES
VINES a Key Part of Mohawk Data Sciences'
Networking Contract with Canadian Governmental Agency
WESTBORO, Mass., May 7, 1991 -- Banyan Systems today reported that
its Canadian reseller Mohawk Data Sciences - Canada Limited (MDS)
has negotiated a major networking contract with Employment and
Immigration Canada (EIC). The agreement creates the potential for
installing and supporting up to 800 BanyanR VINESR networks and up
to 8,000 AcerR 386 PCs having a total value of up to $45 million
over three years. Value of the VINES component of the MDS contract
was not disclosed.
Under the terms of the contract, MDS Canada will initially install
and support VINES-based networks and Acer personal computers
nationwide in 265 local Canada Employment Center offices. The
objective is to support increased levels of automation in these
offices and to provide direct links to EIC's five Regional Computer
Centers and their UNISYSR mainframes.

According to Michael Briand, General Manager of MDS Canada, "From
a product standpoint there were several key reasons that VINES was
the network operating system of choice: its position as a proven
enterprise-wide networking solution, its fully-integrated global
naming service (StreetTalkTM), its competitive pricing, and its
unique ability to support English- and French-speaking users
simultaneously on the same network. VINES, to our knowledge, was
the only network operating system that could satisfy a mandatory
bilingual requirement set by EIC."
Greg Reyes, Banyan Vice President, North American Field Operations,
said, "The Canadian Government has long been an important customer
for Banyan products. We are pleased that, with the efforts of
Mohawk Data Sciences - Canada, we will jointly participate in
implementing one of the most significant PC network installations
in all of Canada."
The Banyan-supplied network operating system software will be a
combination of VINES and VINES Team (the latter for satellite
locations with ten or less users). MDS Canada has already begun
installing the networks, and, in addition, is responsible for all
training, support, and maintenance as each installation is
completed.

Editor's note:
Among other Canadian Government agencies using VINES products are
the Dept. of National Defense, Dept. of Public Works, Dept. of
Communications, Dept. of Fisheries & Oceans, and the National
Archives. VINES has also been adopted by many Canadian
municipalities, colleges and universities, hospitals, banks, and
other private sector businesses and industries.
